In 1984 a variant of the F-15, the Strike Eagle, was selected to supplement the F-111 in the night and adverse weather deep penetration role. It has two crewmen, the rear-seat man being known as the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO). Originally intended to become operational in 1992, the F-15E was quickly rushed into service when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. The F-15E can supplement the F-15C in the air superiority role when needed. [See also F-15C]
